Illustrating Birds

Front cover.jpg

This Project is based on my observation of birds throughout the year in the UK. I studied the birds I saw on my walks from graceful Red kites shoring through the sun’s glow to darting swallows. I also took note of the migrating birds which fly over at specific times of the year to certain isolated areas. More common garden birds to the most exotic-looking waxwing. Incorporating colours of nature to create the bird’s environment. Whether it’s the murky green shoreline we see curlews wading on or the blue sky we gaze up at. as well as incorporating food like seeing goldfinches feasting on teasels or the fight for the red berries of winter. This creates the context for the birds.

I created my illustrations using mixed media. Staring with graphite pencil and followed with watercolour and then digital work in photoshop.

There is a graphic element to each of the artworks. An organic shape creating the background generates depth and contrast between the detailed work and flat colour which is an interesting interaction of overlapping elements.

The popular demand led me to print note cards featuring these bird illustrations if you are interested. which can be used for any occasion. Visit my website to see my details. I have created a book also to purchase.

I exhibited these two A1 framed images at the Hoxton Arches, London in June 2021.

Please email me if you are interested in big prints of the birds.
